Vancouver Neighbourhoods: Kitsilano

Neighbourhood Overview

Kitsilano— “Kits” as it is fondly called by residents— is bordered by English Bay to the north, Burrard Street to the east, Alma Street to the West, and 16th Avenue to the south. Welcoming, charming, and fun, Kits has become one of the most livable neighbourhoods in Vancouver. With its beaches and close-knit community, a favorite pastime of locals is to simply relax, which adds to its reputation as the “hippie” hangout. It comes as no surprise then, that this is also the birthplace of the global yoga brand lululemon athletica.

At the turn of the twentieth century Kitsilano was still dense woodland, despite earlier logging. The Canadian Pacific Railway, the construction of the Burrard Bridge in 1932, and B.C. Electric Railway’s streetcar line, were catalysts in Kitsilano’s development. It was not until World War II that Kits was fully developed until 16th Avenue to the south, at which point the neighbourhood was gaining popularity as it was family-friendly and inexpensive. By the ‘60s hippie culture really started thriving and young people began moving to Kits. It was also at this point that Naam Café, a vegetarian and vegan favorite until today, was founded.

In the last decade or so, more and more people started moving to Kits—thanks to its vibrant culture and a wide range of real estate properties—and so it has also become one of the pricier places to live in. But with all its charm and never-ending fun (not to mention the plethora of restaurants available), Kitsilano has become one of Vancouver’s most desirable neighbourhoods to live in.
