Neighbourhood Overview
Located in the southeastern portion of the Vancouver peninsula, Downtown is Vancouver’s business, arts, sports, and entertainment centre. It is bordered by Burrard Inlet to the north, False Creek to the south, the West End to the west, and East Vancouver to the east.
As it spans most of the city, it has an incredibly diverse collection of communities and a rich history. Gastown and Chinatown are one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Vancouver. In fact, Gastown is the city’s birthplace, beginning with only a saloon and the city’s first business, started by Jack “Gassy “Deighton. Yaletown was once the city’s warehouse district, and Coal Harbour was known for its logging, shipping and railway industries.
Also known for their sports teams, Downtown has two major sporting facilities: Rogers Arena, where the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks play, and BC Place Stadium, where the CFL’s BC Lions and the MLS’s Vancouver Whitecaps FC play. Nearby is Queen Elizabeth Theatre, a performing arts venue, one of Canada’s largest proscenium theatres.
Aside from the office towers of the financial and central business districts that form Vancouver’s iconic skyline, many high-rise apartments in Coal Harbour and Yaletown also dot the landscape.
