Vancouver Neighbourhoods: East Vancouver

Neighbourhood Overview

More of a collection of different neighbourhoods, East Vancouver is bordered to the north by the Burrard Inlet, the Fraser River to the south, and the city of Burnaby to the east. Although there is sometimes disagreement regarding its borders, in this case, it is also bordered to the west by Ontario Street, which separates it from Vancouver’s “West Side,” which is different from the West End.

East Van is made up of 9 communities: Hastings-Sunrise, Grandview-Woodland (“The Drive”), Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Mount Pleasant, Main Street, South Main (“Soma”), Strathcona, Collingwood, and Fraserview. More than anything, East Van is known for its diversity. Many of its neighbourhoods have a rich history of a wide array of immigrants moving in and bringing their heritage with them, forming an entirely new, unique, and vibrant culture in its own league.

Quirky and eclectic, East Van has a loud personality: with all the different cultures mixing and melding, there are a wide array of activities, retail stores, restaurants, pubs, parks, and festivals to explore. It is becoming one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in Vancouver.
