Neighbourhood Overview
The Westside of Vancouver refers to the area that extends from downtown through to the University of British Columbia; in general, it is west of Main Street, which separates it from East Vancouver. It is important to note that Vancouver Westside, the West End, and West Vancouver are three different areas.
The Westside spans almost the entirety of Metro Vancouver—Point Grey also includes the whole campus of the University of British Columbia, one of Canada’s top universities—so it may be difficult to keep track of what exactly is “the Westside.” Put simply, it is a collection of different neighbourhoods: the West End, the Cambie corridor, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Oakridge, Dunbar, Point Grey, and Shaughnessy. Since it’s bounded on all sides by water, the Westside features some of the best beaches Vancouver has to offer, among which are Kits Beach, Spanish Banks (which offers a fantastic view of the city), Jericho, and Wreck Beach (Vancouver’s only nude beach).
Parks are an important part of any community, and you can find some of the best ones in the Westside. Pacific Spirit Park in Point Grey is so big and dense that people hike and camp in it, and Queen Elizabeth Park—the highest point in Vancouver— has acres of rolling grass fields, with beautiful views of the city that make for a great photograph backdrop.
The shopping here is another great reason to live in this neighbourhood. From well-known brands to uniquely local shops, West Broadway and 4th Avenue provide a broad and diverse selection of shopping for all needs.
Almost all kinds of residential developments are available, given the size of the Westside. You’ll find large estate style homes to small studio condos and everything else in between.
