The West End is located on the western side of the City of Vancouver, bordered by West Georgia to the north, Burrard Street to the east, Denman Street to the west, and Beach Avenue to the south. Three bodies of water surround the densely-populated neighbourhood: Coal Harbour, Lost Lagoon, and English Bay.
Neighbourhood Overview
Until 1862, the West End was a heavily forested area before being developed into the city’s first upscale neighbourhood, filled with grand Victorian style homes. By 1910, however, the Canadian Pacific Railway began development on Shaughnessy, which became the city’s new high-class neighbourhood. By 1975, numerous high-rises were built in the West End, creating Vancouver’s iconic skyline.
Owing to its central location, there is always something to do in the West End—with no need for a car, as there are numerous bike lanes and frequent transit buses. Close by is world-famous Stanley Park, where you can take a stroll on one of its many beaches, ride a bike, visit the Vancouver Aquarium, or board an old-fashioned, horse-driven trolley. Davie Village, a hub for the city’s vibrant gay community, and Denman together provide a diverse selection of restaurants—from Japanese ramen bars to farm-to-table bistros—as well as legendary nightclubs, pubs, and brew houses, fitting for a community that knows how to party. The West End also has high-end retail on Robson Street & Alberni Street.
Widely considered to be one of the most beautiful neighbourhoods in Canada, the West End has all kinds of housing available: charming heritage homes, Boutique style low-rises, modern and older high-rises, and spacious townhomes.
