Neighbourhood Overview
Situated along the Burrard Inlet shore, Coal Harbour stretches from Vancouver Convention Centre to Stanley Park. Right next to the West End, it is home to some of Vancouver’s most luxurious and expensive high-end condos. While coal was indeed found here back in June 1859, Coal Harbour later came to be known for its lumber, shipping, and railway industries, because of its convenient location along the Canadian Pacific Railway’s terminus.
Unfortunately, it all burned down in the 1950s, but this brought about residential redevelopment. Through the 1960s to the 1990s, the Westin Bayshore Hotel was constructed alongside many residential towers, and notably, Canada Place with its iconic white sails.
Most remarkable is its marina along the sea wall, which is a great place to take a midday stroll in, or to sit on a park bench and read a book. With beautiful views of snow-capped Northshore Mountains and still waters, the neighbourhood can be very relaxed, except for the occasional jogger or cyclist. But still both locals and visitors mingle here, because of the many attractions such as the iconic Olympic flame from the 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Games, Douglas Coupland’s Digital Orca at the Jack Poole Plaza, and the seawall itself—oftentimes you can see a seaplane whizzing by, or people kayaking or stand up paddle boarding.
Despite its relaxed vibe, there is always something to do in Coal Harbour—with many restaurants, pubs, retail stores, and attractions to check out—most notable of which is Canada Place’s 4D Fly Over Canada virtual flight.
